Museums

For an extra dose of history, there are two museums in Hilo to check out. The Lyman House museum has a nice collection of Hawaiian artifacts. Or, the Tsunami museum, which has a fascinating collection of pictures and a video to learn more about these devastating tidal waves. Both of these museums are paid, and are open almost every day. 

Food

Second up is one of our favorite things to do in Hilo - visit the Hilo Farmers Market. They are open every day - with lots of vendors selling local fruits, vegetables, and all sorts of food. Wednesdays and Saturdays are their big market days, with even more vendors than usual.

Lastly, if you’re hungry, there are three great restaurants that we suggest. Café 100 is a great local burger-and-fries type of place, with a variety of barbeque plate options served with rice. Legend has it that the famous Loco Moco was invented here. It’s a Hawaiian specialty of rice topped with a meat patty, fried egg, and gravy.

If you’re looking for a little nicer sit-down type restaurant, Café Pesto is a great Italian eatery that serves, among other things, wood-fired pizza. If you’re into Japanese food, Miyo’s has great homestyle Japanese cooking.
