The Pacific Coast Highway between San Francisco and Monterey can be enjoyed year-round thanks to its mild coastal climate.

  • Summer is the busiest season and offers warm temperatures, but coastal fog can obscure views, especially in the mornings.
  • Spring brings wildflowers, greener landscapes, and fewer crowds.
  • Fall often provides some of the clearest weather and best coastal views.
  • Winter is the best season for viewing elephant seals and migrating monarch butterflies.
  • Weather conditions can change rapidly along the coast, so be prepared for sun, wind, fog, and cooler temperatures at any time of year.

Advanced Reservations

Some attractions along the route may require advance planning.

  • During the winter elephant seal breeding season, the only way to view the elephant seals at Año Nuevo State Park is through a guided walking tour.
  • Reservations are strongly recommended, as tours frequently sell out.
  • Reservations can be made through Reserve California.
  • Certain seasonal events and attractions may also require advance tickets.

Safety Information

  • The Pacific Ocean remains cold year-round, even during summer months.
  • Strong rip currents and large waves can make swimming dangerous at many beaches.
  • Always obey posted warning signs and stay back from unstable cliff edges.
  • Never turn your back on the ocean when standing near the shoreline.
  • If a tsunami warning is issued, move to higher ground immediately and follow instructions from local authorities.
  • Drive carefully along coastal roads and watch for cyclists, pedestrians, and wildlife.
