Tips for Navigating Going-to-the-Sun Road

Tip #1: Plan Your Trip

Timing is crucial when exploring Going-to-the-Sun Road. The road is typically only fully open from mid-June to early October, depending on snowfall.

Early summer offers spectacular waterfall views, while late summer provides clearer skies and more stable weather conditions.

Always check the National Park Service website for current road conditions and potential closures before your trip.

Tip #2: Vehicle Reservations, Restrictions, and Shuttle Options

Throughout the summer, you’ll need to have a vehicle reservation to enter Going-to-the-Sun Road from West Glacier.

Vehicle reservations must be booked in advance at recreation.gov, either 120 days or 24 hours in advance. Reservations are generally released at 7 p.m. MST.

Please keep in mind that vehicle reservations are highly competitive and sell out fast—usually within hours.

Again, a parking pass is not a vehicle reservation, and these two items must be purchased separately in order to drive your own vehicle along the Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Even if you’ve snagged a coveted vehicle reservation, be sure you have the right kind of vehicle before setting out.

Due to the road's narrow and winding nature, there are strict vehicle size restrictions. Vehicles over 21 feet long (including trailers) are prohibited.

What do you do if you can’t secure a vehicle reservation?

Visitors can park their vehicles and board the park shuttle at the Apgar Visitor Center. Or, visitors can enter in their personal car before or after gate-check hours, or from the St. Mary entrance at any time.

The free shuttle operates between Lake McDonald and St. Mary, making stops at key scenic points. Your Shaka Guide Tour works whether you are on the shuttle or in your own vehicle.

Tip #3: Pack for Changing Weather Conditions

Mountain weather can be unpredictable. Pack layers, including a waterproof jacket, warm sweater, and comfortable hiking clothes.

Temperatures can drop significantly at higher elevations, even during summer months. Always carry water, snacks, and emergency supplies (especially bear spray!).

Tip #4: Photography and Scenic Stops

Numerous pullouts and scenic viewpoints line the road, offering perfect photo opportunities.

Logan Pass, the highest point accessible by car, provides stunning vistas and wildlife viewing chances.

Bring a good camera, and consider bringing binoculars to spot mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and other wildlife.

Tip #5: Hiking and Outdoor Activities

While driving the road is an experience itself, numerous hiking trails offer deeper exploration. Popular trails include Hidden Lake Overlook, Highline Trail, and the trail to Jackson Glacier Overlook.

Ensure you're prepared with proper hiking gear, bear spray, and knowledge of wildlife safety protocols. Check trail conditions and difficulty levels before setting out.

Tip #6: Fuel and Supplies Planning

Limited services are available along the road. Fill up your gas tank before entering the park, and stock up on supplies in nearby towns like West Glacier or St. Mary. Carry extra water, snacks, and a full tank of gas.

Cell phone coverage can be spotty, so download offline maps and have a physical map as backup.

If you have Shaka Guide, there’s no need to worry—after you download it, your tour will work offline, and no signal is needed!

Tip #7: Be Patient and Start Early

The Going-to-the-Sun Road can be busy, narrow, and winding, so expect some delays. Parking lots may fill up quickly, and pull-offs could be crowded.

Drivers might not always see you pulling in or out, so be patient, drive cautiously, and stay alert for pedestrians and vehicles.

If you're planning to hike at popular spots like The Loop or Logan Pass, be aware that parking lots tend to fill up by 9 or 10 A.M.

To secure a spot, arrive early or be ready to return on another day.
