In our opinion, Maui is one of the world’s best islands. If you have a chance to experience a sunset in Maui, consider yourself lucky. The colors are breathtaking. Not to mention the picture-perfect scenery that surrounds you. Here’s a list of our top five spots to catch a sunset on the Valley Isle.
1. Kapalua Bay

A sunset at Kapalua Bay offers purple and orange hues that fill the sky and gleam over the nearby tide pools. This bay is a great place to spend the day; rocks protect it from outside waves making it the perfect snorkel spot. After you’ve had your fill of swimming and snorkeling, take a seat on the beach to watch the sunset.
2. Big Beach, Makena State Park
Big Beach at Makena State Park offers a secluded alternative to some of Maui's more popular beaches, but there's no shortage of beauty. That’s why we’ve named it one our top five spots for a remarkable sunset in Maui. The sunset is breathtaking as it falls over two nearby islands, Molokini and Kahoolawe.
3. Haleakala National Park
A list of sunset spots wouldn't be complete without Haleakala. Haleakala means “house of the sun” in Hawaiian, and this National Park is the top spot to watch the sunset in Hawaii. Legend has it that the demigod, Maui, lassoed the sun, slowing it down to make its descent longer.
You can learn all about Maui on a trip to Haleakala with Shaka Guide. In fact, we have a Sunset and Stargazing at Haleakala driving tour!
4. Lahaina Pali Trail
For a sunset in Maui with an aerial view overlooking the ocean, head to Lahaina Pali Trail. You can get to the Lahaina Pali Trail by car, then hike your way to the panoramic viewpoint overlooking the sea. Parking can be difficult to find — from Lahaina, you’ll make a right before the tunnel and the parking lot is on your left. The full hike is 10 miles, but the best spot to watch the sunset is only 15 minutes from the trailhead.
5. Pride of Maui Sunset Tour
You can also watch the sunset from the sea on Pride of Maui’s Sunset Dinner Cruise. The excursion includes a buffet dinner and Polynesian dance show — you might even see whales. Step outside to truly watch the sun set over the horizon.
If you’re heading to Maui, you'll probably catch some of the most beautiful sunsets you’ll ever see. We hope you to get to experience all the beauty of this island at these five spots to watch the sunset. If you ask us, they’re the perfect compliment to any of the Shaka Guide Maui Driving Tours.
