Visiting Isaac Hale Beach & Pohoiki Hot Springs - What You Need to Know
Listen to audio sample:
A popular natural volcanic hot spring in Puna is the Isaac Hale Beach Park. This is a rugged oceanfront park that is a great place to relax, have a picnic, and watch people surf.
Many locals hang out here, and you will find ample parking - although it can be crowded at times. There is a large children’s playground, and usually there are lots of food trucks around. Snorkeling can be great when the water is calm. But frequent large waves, rip tides, and rocky shoreline actually make this beach more ideal for surfing, than swimming. So please be aware!
Another hot spring nearby is called Pohoiki Hot Springs. It is much smaller than the previous one. To get to the Pohoiki Hotspring, walk along the footpath to the right of the boat ramp for a short distance. It’s surrounded by trees - ya can't miss it!
Now if you just want to relax and check out the beach, take a left from the parking area and you can follow a sidewalk to shaded picnic areas under the coconut and mango trees. It is fun to comb through the beach and look for sea glass in the sand. Sea glass refers to small pieces of broken glass smoothed by the ocean. Some people like to collect them. There is also a boat dock here where boat tours leave to view lava up close from the ocean. If you have a chance, it’s quite an amazing experience! Want to visit the Big Island?
