Volcano Village: Living in a Volcano's Shadow

Shaka Guide

Listen to audio sample:

Just past the entrance to Volcanoes National Park, the next left turn is Volcano Village. This welcoming little town lives on the wild side, since it’s on the doorstep of an active volcano - and in the middle of a rainforest. Even though you can’t see them from the highway, there are thousands of homes in subdivisions deep in the surrounding trees.

The weather around it is usually very cool, and the nights can get downright chilly. Some of the homes even have fireplaces! We bet you never thought there’d be fireplaces in Hawaii...

Every Sunday morning, there’s a great farmer’s market from 6:30 to 10am at the Cooper Center. So, if you happen to stop by during market hours, you really should check it out for fresh fruit, pastries, lunch items, and local crafts.
