Kauai Coffee: The Largest Coffee Grower in the United States

Shaka Guide

Listen to audio sample:

One of the most popular must visit spots when you are in Kauai is the Kauai Coffee Plantation.

Near it, on the sides of the roads, can be seen bush like plants. Those are coffee trees! If you visit during the right time of the year, you will see the bright red coffee berries all over these bushes. But…wait… I thought coffee beans are brown?

Well, they sure are! You see, after the fresh red berries are harvested, the pit or seed of the berry is then removed, dried and roasted. In the process, the pit turns from a light green color, to the brownish coffee color that we see all the time. Pretty neat huh! I bet some of you didn’t know that your coffee beans are actually the pit of the coffee berry. By the way, the same thing is true for chocolate!

Everyone has heard of Kona Coffee, but have you heard of Kauai Coffee? Well, if you haven’t, now is a good time to check it out…. You see, the rich volcanic dirt and cool trade winds on this island make for ideal growing conditions.

In fact, you’d probably never guess, but the Kauai Coffee company is the largest coffee grower in the entire United States! There are over 4 million coffee trees on some 3,000 acres you see around the area. That is a heck of a lot of cappuccinos!

At Kauai Coffee’s Visitor center, they offer free coffee samples in a large variety of flavors! There is also a pleasant walking trail that meanders through the farm, and shows you  the ‘behind the scenes’ story of how coffee is made… from start to finish.
