My wife and I used the Shaka tours over five different days during our stay on the big island. We really enjoyed the experience and believe that we got to see so much more of the culture in Hawaii because of these tours. Considering the cost is $30 for the package of five tours, it’s the best value out there in terms of a Hawaii vacation. Make sure you prepare - bring snacks, change of clothes, snorkel, gear, swimsuits, etc., as different spots are pointed out on each of the tours. this is a terrific way for those with a bit of venture to see the islands on their terms.

Decent overall (showed us new places), but definitely buggy, cut out too early in some cases and needs to be improved for overlaying or something with existing mapping apps (Waze, Google Maps). Using the maps in the shaka guide is awful - the direction is never pointing the right way and you can't customize which direction to point the map (the only two options you have are direction of travel, which is wrong, and north up, which is dizzying during the turns). I wish they added more time info

The park is open 24 hours a day but the visitor centers and attractions have varying hours of operation. See below for more details:

Beaver Meadows Visitor Center is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in summer, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in fall, and 9 a.m. to 4:30 in winter.
Fall River Visitor Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. year-round.
Alpine Visitor Center is open Memorial Day through mid-October, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Moraine Park Discovery Center is open spring through fall, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Kawuneeche Visitor Center is open summer and fall from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., winter and spring from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed Mondays and Tuesday.

Yes! Feel free to join the tour along the route. Just make sure that you follow the numbers in chronological order from where you are starting from. If you don’t begin at one of the tour starting points you’ll miss a few stories, but you’ll still have a great experience.

No, this tour is only available in one direction, starting at Estes Park and ending at Grand Lake.
