At the visitor center, you can shop the bookstore, use the restroom, check out the interpretive displays, talk to a ranger, and get your backcountry permits.

When we get to the top of this hill, I want you to cast your eyes to the right. You will see a tall canyon wall on the other side of the highway. That is the Moab Fault. A small viewpoint will be coming up on your right. Feel free to make a quick stop if you'd like. As you may know, a fault is a crack in the earth's tectonic plate. About 6 million years ago, a period of intense tectonic activity created enormous pressure that pushed down on the canyon wall we are driving on right now. The result? Just 3.6 miles after Arches National Park Visitor Center this is many visitors' first scenic stop. At Park Avenue you can gaze down a grand boulevard of rock and let your imagination loose. Previous visitors named some of the rock features here "Queen Nefertiti", "Queen Victoria" and "Sausage Rock" (also known as ""The Corndog"") Beyond the viewpoint Park Avenue Trail is a moderate hike past a soaring rock skyline of massive fins and curiously carved towers. La Sal Mountains Viewpoint is a 0.1 kilometer moderately trafficked loop trail located near Moab, Utah that offers scenic views and is good for all skill levels. The Petrified Dunes viewpoint can be found along the Arches Scenic Drive. From here, you can look out over a sea of petrified sand dunes that once covered an area larger than the Sahara Desert in Africa today.Alltrails

This seemingly gravity-defying formation has a "big head" or ball at the top, made of the hardy entrada sandstone. The pedestal below is made of Carmel sandstone, softer and less resistant to erosion. Here is one of the few areas in the park where you can view this Carmel sandstone. You see, this type of formation usually erodes quickly and would be gone by now. But here's something wild: at the Balanced Rock, the large ball above acts like an umbrella, protecting the spire below from erosion, and keeping it tightly packed together.NealVickers, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

The Garden of Eden is a great place to wander around. This is an open terrain, dotted with fins, windows, and baby arches or arches still being formed. Get ready to bust out your camera for some amazing shots with La Sal Mountain in the background. There is no designated trail though, so be sure to watch your step for any biocrust. Let me take a minute to tell you about the Double Arch. It's the tallest arch in the park at 112ft, or about 1 story high, It's truly majestic to behold. And if the Double Arch looks strangely familiar to you, it might be because you've seen it before! It was in the opening scene of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. You might remember, the boy scouts in the movie go towards the arches on horseback and dismount to explore. High above, carved into the rock, is a subtle but fascinating formation-Pothole Arch. Unlike the towering arches that stand like gateways in the desert, this one formed from water collecting in natural depressions, slowly wearing through the sandstone until a hole emerged. It doesn't demand attention like some of the park's more dramatic landmarks; instead, it blends into the landscape, almost hiding in plain sight. At Panorama Point, you can see the La Sal Mountains, Fiery Furnace, Devil's Garden, and more!

Visit a cabin that was built over a century ago - at the beginning of the 20th century. Nearby, find a bit of history that dates back much further - some Ute petroglyphs that could date back as early as 1650. While visiting, be sure to respect the petroglyphs, and refrain from adding to them.

No visit to Arches National Park is complete without a visit to Delicate Arch. This place got its name because the rocks here glow as if it's on fire when the sun is at the right angle. There's an interpretive sign and great views of the Fiery Furnace maze of sharp rocks at this scenic viewpoint.Image: KimonBerlin, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Tucked between towering sandstone fins, Sand Dune Arch feels like a hidden desert playground, with soft, orange sand that's cool underfoot-almost like a beach, if you use your imagination. The short ?-mile walk takes you through a narrow canyon, where kids and the young at heart can't resist digging their toes into the fine sand. If you keep going, the trail leads to Broken Arch, a quieter, less-traveled 2-mile round-trip hike. Despite its name, the arch isn't actually broken-just sporting a dramatic crack across the top. Maybe "Cracked Arch" would've been a better name? Either way, it's one of those spots where you can slow down, take in the views, and appreciate how time and nature carve out something incredible.

Next up, we are approaching the Skyline Arch. This large arch sits just above the horizon, framing the sky as a wonderful window arch. As we get closer, you'll actually begin to see it in front of us to the right. No hiking is required. But if you want to, just 10 minutes by foot will get you up close to the arch. Adventure waits for sightseers, hikers, and thrill-seekers in Devils Garden - one of the premier locations in the park. Here you'll find arches, spires, and a large concentration of narrow rock walls called "fins." Fins form when rainwater erodes parallel fractures caused by the uplift of salt deposits below the surface.
